GULF LIVE: Local school officials cast wary eye on legislative budget recommendation

gulf liveOCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi — It was with a mixture of concern and hope local school superintendents greeted this week’s release of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee’s recommendation for the fiscal 2017 state budget.

The report calls for level funding of the Mississippi Adequate Education Program — the formula by which appropriate funding for K-12 public school is determined. Level funding means public school will be appropriated the same amount for the 2016-2017 school year as the current year — $2.241 billion.

Which means public schools will once again left with fewer dollars than the amount MAEP mandates.
